Jim King Firefighter Memorial

The Jim King Firefighter Memorial was established by Jim's siblings, other family members, and friends of Jim after his passing away from a brain tumor. While gathering together at a picnic shortly after Jim's death they wished to somehow see that his legacy of continual public service never died. They decided the best way to do so was to help someone else enter a Public Service field. It was decided to establish a scholarship in his memory. They then needed a means to raise funds for the scholarship and a place to hold whatever the event they decided to do. Since there were runners in the group and Jim was a firefighter his entire life, everything began to come together to have a 5K event to be held every year at the Athens Township Volunteer Fire Company.

The organization was setup and is run by volunteers as is the day of the event. We currently are in the process of organizing and electing officers for this non-profit organization and look forward to announcing this information in March of 2007. All monies received are used to offset the expenses for the 5K and the balance is disbursed to the M&T Bank in Athens, PA for the yearly scholarship. The $1000 scholarship has been named the Jim King Memorial Public Service Scholarship and shall be awarded to an Athens Area High School senior who is entering the Public Service Field beginning in June of 2007. The Jim King Memorial Committee also presents a $500.00 scholarship to a senior from any area school who writes an essay about themselves and why they are entering a public service field.
